Offering a more comprehensive perspective on the growth of the industry nationally, the Global Wellness Institute, a nonprofit research and educational resource for the wellness industry, reported that “…the global wellness market grew 10.6 percent to $3.72 trillion from 2013 to 2015 (latest figures available), while the global economy shrank 3.6 percent over the same period.” Within that market growth, alternative and complementary medicine saw some of the most significant growth across all sectors with a 65% increase since 2010. Furthermore, a 2014 Global Wellness Institute Study revealed that the global wellness market was worth $3.4 trillion, making it nearly three times larger than the $1 trillion worldwide pharmaceutical industry.
Similarly, IBISWorld reports that the “…Alternative Healthcare Providers industry is becoming more mainstream and less alternative. Consistent demand for alternative care is partly attributable to the essential nature of industry services, as patients are less likely to cut spending on healthcare than they are to reduce spending on more discretionary goods.”
The research, while covering both national and international trends applies to Palm Beach County where even hospitals (ie. Jupiter Medical Center) are formally integrating alternative and complementary practices into the allopathic arena.
Driven especially by consumers’ disappointment in the mainstream approach to help prevent illness and/or heal it naturally to create health and wellness, the industry’s upward growth trend is poised to continue. Even more so in light of the fact that as traditional insurance covers less and less patients feel more and more compelled to spend their health dollars in ways and places that feel good to them.
